I'm thrilled to announce that I've been named winner of the 2009 Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Award for Imaginative Fiction, as chosen by Rosebud Magazine's judge Nina Kiriki Hoffman. My winning story, "The Freak Museum" will appear in Rosebud's spring issue. I'm such a fan of Mary Shelley, a fact which prompted me to enter the contest to be begin with. She was a woman of talent and illumination at a time when it couldn't fully be appreciated. She loved deeply, lost greatly, and died too young. She wrote many works of probing fiction, which I recommend reading, of course, but her novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus is a great introduction. And if you're wondering which tea to drink while you read her compelling tale, visit my blog post at English Tea Store.com to find my recommendation. |

I recently had the honor of addressing a masters writing class at Overton High School in Memphis. We spoke together from lunch until the day-end bell about writing, publishing, and the industry. What an amazing, determined group of minds! The teacher, Shannon Marszalek, who arranged for the meeting, fills a necessary role of encourager; it’s obvious she adores and respects the talent of her kids. I spoke with poets, mainstream writers, and a science fiction writer (in whom I recognized a kindred spirit). Each young adult was as interested in the business of writing as well as writing itself, which I feel is such an important element. |

Catch the interview with Jackie Gamber, author of Redheart, and founder of the Humans Against Dragon Stereotypes foundation (HADS). She talks with Choate Road about her efforts to help fight Specism.
As Greg Hall shared, "I recalled a lady I had met briefly months ago. She chucked a metal disc at my head and when I looked over to her booth, she whispered ‘The Dragons. They need you.’ I rubbed my sore forehead and read what wound up being a button. It said ‘FIGHT SPECISM.’"
"This was who I had to interview. Someone who understood the world is a much bigger place than just our hectic little lives." To read the entire interview, follow the link >> Jackie Gamber Interview |

At an awards banquet during MidSouthCon 26, the 2008 Darrell Award winners were announced. Jackie had two stories as finalists in the short story category, but there was a charmingly stunned look on her face as the winner was revealed. The room erupted in shouts and applause as it was announced, "The winner of the 2008 Darrell Award for short story is Jackie Gamber, author of 'The Monster'." The Darrell Awards are memorial awards given annually in the categories of short story, novella, and novel to promote literary science fiction and fantasy in the southeastern part of the U.S. A special thanks to the jury, the readers, and MidSouthCon for hosting the banquet. Check back here to see when Jackie's feet touch the ground again. |

We received great news that Jackie has been selected as a finalist for the Darrell Award, a literary award promoting science fiction and fantasy in the southeastern part of the U.S. The amazing part was that out of 7 finalists for the award, Jackie is two of them. That's correct. Two short stories she published last year were voted high enough by the committee to place as finalists. We should have asked for two tickets to the awards banquet at MidSouth Con--one for each Jackie! |
